Earlier this year we had the opportunity to celebrate two milestone birthdays and experience the brand new Explora I by Explora Journeys, our newest cruise partner. This brand and vessel have been years in the making. Before venturing onboard, we had watched presentations, read countless articles, and reviews, and met with members of their sales and executive team. We had studied hard. Our expectations were high and honestly, we were not disappointed…
As part of MSC Cruises' ambitious venture into the ultra-luxury market, the idea behind Explora Journeys is that they represent a bold step away from traditional cruising, offering an experience more akin to a superyacht or boutique resort. This review is going to focus on the ship itself, but our journey took us from Cartagena, Columbia, to Colon and the Panama Canal, then on to Bonaire, Curaçao, Martinique, and Barbados. You would be right in thinking that these seem like less common stops for a cruise line. This is part of the appeal - more unique experiences aboard a vessel that promises and delivers an unparalleled level of luxury and intimacy.

A New Era of Luxury Cruising
Explora Journeys is quickly establishing itself as a game-changer in the luxury cruise sector. Our ship, the Explora I is the first of six ships planned to launch over the next four years. It is a testament to MSC's vision of redefining luxury at sea, a goal that sounded more like a sales pitch until we saw it firsthand. The ship's design, a collaborative effort by renowned designers, emphasizes smart, compartmentalized interiors that extend into thoughtfully crafted exterior spaces, that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ensure that guests never feel crowded. The ship's European service style, while traditional, was executed with a level of discretion and personalization that made our experience feel uniquely tailored to our preferences.
Unmatched Accommodations and Amenities
Our suite aboard the Explora I was the most comfortable and spacious I’ve experienced in this category. It offered oceanfront views through floor-to-ceiling windows and a private terrace that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the vastness of the sea. The attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the suite, from the heated marble bathroom floors to the rubber strip on the clothes hanger rail that stops them from sliding around adding a personalized touch to our experience.
Culinary Excellence and Diverse Entertainment
Dining aboard the Explora I was a journey in itself, with 11 globally-inspired culinary options that emphasized sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. The highlight for most was Anthology, where guest chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants crafted exquisite tasting menus, but all were impressive. Our favorite non-specialty restaurant was the Med Yacht Club. The ship's entertainment offerings were equally impressive, from live music and photography workshops to destination-specific cooking classes that enriched our understanding and appreciation of the places we visited.
Sustainability at the Forefront
Explora Journeys' commitment to sustainability was evident in its initiatives, from the elimination of single-use plastics to the use of LNG marine fuel and high-efficiency appliances. One of the unforeseen results of this was the quietest engine on a ship of this size that we’ve ever experienced. These efforts, coupled with the goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, underscored the brand's dedication to environmental stewardship.
